The Centre for Population produces population projections to inform policy makers and the public about Australia’s future growth. They aim to take account of the latest available demographic information and include adjustments to account for the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Centre produces population projections at the national, state and territory, and capital city and balance of state (using the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ Greater Capital City Statistical Area definitions) levels.
The population projections at the capital city and balance of state level are currently updated annually, while the national and state and territory projections may be updated more frequently.
You can find the Centre’s most recently completed population projections for each level of geography, as well as links to older projections.
For further information about the method and underlying assumptions used in each set of projections please see the relevant publication.
